Biodiversity is vital for our survival
For centuries, humans have been interfering with the world’s natural ecosystem. As humans traveled and settled in different parts of the world in the modern era, they cleared land for farming, cut forests for shipbuilding, and began hunting and trapping for money. Wildlife hunting and poaching became more common over time, and wildlife populations began to decline around the world. According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF)’s Living Planet Report 2017, global wildlife populations have declined by 58 per cent between 1970 and 2012. INTERPOL, on the other hand, estimates that the international illegal wildlife trade is worth between $10 and $20 billion USD per year.

আজ বিশ্ব প্রাণী দিবস। এর মূল লক্ষ্য হচ্ছে, পৃথিবীর প্রতিটি প্রান্তে প্রাণিজগতের কল্যাণের জন্য বার্তা পৌঁছে দেওয়া এবং প্রাণীকল্যাণ আন্দোলনকে যূথবদ্ধ করা। জীববৈচিত্র্যের একাংশ জুড়ে রয়েছে প্রাণিকুল। প্রাণীরা পৃথিবীর অস্তিত্ব টিকিয়ে রাখতে সাহায্য করে। প্রতিটি প্রাণী তার কার্যক্রমের মধ্য দিয়ে জীবজগৎ রক্ষায় গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে। শুধু তাই নয়, প্রত্যেক প্রাণী জীবনযুদ্ধ করে প্রাণী ও খাদ্যশৃঙ্খল রক্ষা করে চলেছে।

Dhaka, the city of our lives, is uninhabitable, the Economist Intelligence Unit of the United Kingdom announced in 2018. ‘Pollution’ and ‘traffic congestion’ are some of the reasons for being uninhabitable. Pollution and traffic congestion are interrelated. Long traffic jams on the roads play a major role in increasing air pollution. Although Dhaka is included in the megacity, there is no other megacity like Dhaka with so much traffic congestion.

Cycling and walking contribute to making city liveable
Currently, people are using cars so much that traffic is one of the major problems in many countries of the world. To solve this problem worldwide, every year on September 22, the “World Car-Free Day” is celebrated in many countries. The first “World Car-Free Day” was celebrated in 2000 and in our country the day was celebrated by some people and individual organization in 2006 on their own initiative. From 2016 onwards, the government here started celebrating this day. The purpose of this day is to set aside just a single day each month for taking vehicles off the road, doing renovations, providing free spaces for sports or diversion, giving people some relief from the mechanical life.

প্রাণী এই গ্রহে ঈশ্বরের একটি মূল্যবান উপহার। ‘প্রাণী’ শব্দটি বলতে শুধু প্রাণীদেরই নয়, বরং পাখি, পোকামাকড়, গাছপালা, ছত্রাক, এমনকি অতিক্ষুদ্র প্রাণীসহ সব প্রাণবন্ত জীবনোপকরণকে বোঝায়।এ পৃথিবীতে একটি সুস্থ পরিবেশগত ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখার জন্য প্রাণীর গুরুত্ব অনেক। প্রতিটি প্রাণীর খাদ্য শৃঙ্খলে এক অনন্য জায়গা রয়েছে, যা বাস্তুসংস্থান নিয়ন্ত্রণে বিশেষ অবদান রাখে। কিন্তু বর্তমানে অনেক প্রাণী ও পাখি বিপন্ন হচ্ছে।

কালো ধোঁয়ায় ছেয়ে যাচ্ছে পরিবেশ

বিকাল বেলায় অস্তমিত সূর্যের আলোয় নির্মল বাতাস গায়ে লাগিয়ে হাঁটতে কার না ভালো লাগে! কিন্তু যান্ত্রিকতা আর দূষণ আমাদের এই ভালোলাগাকে পুরোপুরি গ্রাস করে নিয়েছে। ঢাকা শহরের এমন কোনো জায়গা নেই, যেখানে মানুষ নির্মল বায়ুতে শ্বাস নেবে। বিশ্বে প্রতিবছর প্রায় ৩৩ লাখ মানুষ মারা যায় বায়ু দূষণের কারণে। এর মধ্যে ৭৫ শতাংশ মৃত্যুই ঘটে হার্ট অ্যাটাক থেকে আর বাকি ২৫ শতাংশ ফুসফুস রোগে মারা যায়। বায়ু দূষণের মাত্রা এশিয়ায় সবচেয়ে বেশি।
